Dandelion seeds

Paardebloempluizenbollen, opeens stond onze tuin er vol mee. Op onze fototocht vorige week kwamen mijn broer en ik er ook een heleboel tegen, en ik blies de pluisjes weg terwijl hij foto’s maakte.

Deze week bleef ik vooral thuis en werkte ik aan mijn thesis. Toen ik naar buiten ging, was ik verwonderd dat het eerst zo koud was en daarna zo warm. Ik vind het eigenlijk helemaal niet zo erg als het af en toe eens regent in de lente, want de dagen worden hoe dan ook langer, en de afwisseling tussen regen en zon maakt dat ik van allebei meer kan genieten. Ik vind het best fijn om op kot in mijn zeteltje woordjes te zitten tikken in excel terwijl de regen buiten op de ramen tikt. Ik vind het best nog avontuurlijk om tijdens een vijf minuten lang wandelingetje (mét paraplu gelukkig) de grootste stortbui van de hele week over mij heen te krijgen. Maar ik vind het ook fijn om bij ons thuis op het terras te zitten, om met mijn blote voeten door het gras te lopen en mij te verbeelden dat het al zomer is.

Houden jullie ook zo van de lente?

All of a sudden, our garden was full of dandelion blowballs. On our walk last week, my brother and I found a field that was full of them, and I blew away the seeds while he made pictures.

This week, I mostly stayed at home and worked on my thesis. When I went outside, I was surprised, first because it was so cold, and the next day because it was so warm. I don’t think it’s all that bad if it rains every once in a while when it’s spring, because the days are getting longer anyway, and the alternation between rain and sun makes me enjoy both of them even more. I actually don’t mind being at my dorm, sitting on my sofa, typing words in excel while the rain is tapping on my window. I think it’s pretty adventurous to go out for a five minute walk (with an umbrella, luckily) and going through the biggest downpour of the whole week. But I also really like to sit on the terrace at home, to walk on the grass barefoot and imagine it’s summer already.

Two Swedish movies

Een tijdje geleden maakte ik een post met filmtips, en omdat ik het zelf altijd fijn vind om nieuwe films te ontdekken, en ook omdat ik het zo leuk vond om erover te schrijven, besloot ik om vandaag weer zo’n post te maken. Vorige week zag ik twee mooie Zweedse films, en ik vond ze zo goed dat ik jullie er ook over wilde vertellen :)

A little while ago, I made a post with some tips for good movies, and since I really like to discover new movies, and since it’s so much fun to write, I decided to make another movie tips post. Last week, I watched two beautiful Swedish movies, and I liked them so much that I wanted to tell you about them :)

Känn ingen sorg (‘Heb geen medelijden’) is een film die gebaseerd is op de teksten van de Zweedse muzikant Håkan Hellström. De film draait om het personage Pål, een jonge twintiger die in Göteborg bij zijn grootvader woont, en zijn dagen doorbrengt samen met zijn vrienden Lena en Johnny. Zijn grootste droom is om muzikant te worden, maar zijn grootste obstakel bij het verwezenlijken van die droom is hijzelf, want telkens wanneer hij voor publiek moet spelen raakt hij in paniek. Dan ontmoet hij Eva, een vriendin van Johnny, die vindt dat Pål een talent heeft en hem wil helpen om zijn angst te overwinnen.

Ik vond het echt een mooi verhaal, en hoewel ik de muziek van Håkan Hellström nooit echt zo boeiend vond, heb ik door deze film veel goede nieuwe liedjes van hem leren kennen. Ik weet niet of je hem ook in België en/of Nederland kan kopen, maar als je hem ergens kan vinden dan raad ik hem in elk geval zeker aan! Klik hier om de trailer te zien.

Känn ingen sorg (‘Shed no tears’) is a movie that’s based on the lyrics of the Swedish musician Håkan Hellström. The story is about Pål, a young man who lives with his grandfather in Gothenburg, and spends his days with his friends Lena and Johnny. It’s his dream to become a musician, but the biggest obstacle in realizing that dream is himself, because every time he tries to play in front of an audience, he gets into a panic. Then, he meets Eva, a friend of Johnny, who thinks that Pål is very talented and wants to help him to overcome his fear.

I thought it was a beautiful story, and even though I haven’t always been super interested in Håkan Hellström’s music, I discovered a lot of new songs of his that I really like. I’m not sure if you can buy this somewhere outside of Sweden, but if you can find it, I definitely recommend it! Click here to see the trailer.

Torka aldrig tårar utan handskar (‘Droog nooit tranen zonder handschoenen’) is een drie uur lange mini-serie die gebaseerd is op het gelijknamige boek van Jonas Gardell. Het verhaal speelt zich af in het Stockholm van de jaren ’80. Rasmus woont in een klein dorpje vlakbij Noorwegen en is net afgestudeerd van de middelbare school. Hij heeft genoeg van het leven op het platteland, en verhuist naar Stockholm, waar hij de homogemeenschap opzoekt. Benjamin is getuige van Jehova, en woont ook in Stockholm, samen met zijn ouders en zijn zus. Hij is ook homo, maar probeert die gevoelens te onderdrukken. Op een dag klopt hij aan bij Paul, die meteen door hem heen prikt, en hem uitnodigt om bij hem Kerstmis te komen vieren. Op kerstavond ontmoeten Rasmus en Benjamin elkaar bij Paul thuis, en het is liefde op het eerste gezicht. Maar dan steekt in de stad een geheimzinnige ziekte de kop op.

Ik vond het tegelijk een van de mooiste en verdrietigste films die ik ooit heb gezien. Ik wil eigenlijk nog niet te veel loslaten over het verhaal, want het is eigenlijk nog beter als je nog niet te veel weet waar het over gaat. De beelden zijn ook mooi: hoewel de film is gemaakt in 2012, zijn de beelden een beetje korrelig, alsof ze ook echt in de jaren ’80 gemaakt zijn. Ik weet niet of je hem bij ons kan kopen, maar als je de film ergens kan vinden: zeker kijken! Klik hier om de trailer te zien.

Torka aldrig tårar utan handskar (‘Don’t ever wipe tears without gloves’) is a three hour long mini-series based on a novel series by Jonas Gardell. The story is set in Stockholm in the 1980s. Rasmus lives in a small village near Norway and has just graduated from high school. He’s tired of living on the countryside and decides to move to Stockholm, where he goes looking for the gay community. Benjamin is a Jehova’s witness, and he also lives in Stockholm, together with his parents and his sister. He is gay as well, but he has always tried to suppress those feelings. One day, he knocks on Paul’s door, who immediately sees through him, and invites him to come over for Christmas. On Christmas Eve, Rasmus and Benjamin meet each other at Paul’s house, and it’s love at first sight. But then, a mysterious illness appears in the city.

This was one of the most beautiful and sad movies I have ever seen. I don’t want to tell you too much about the story, because it’s better if you don’t know too much in advance. The images are beautiful as well: even though it was made in 2012, the images are a bit coarse-grained, as if they were really made in the 80s. I don’t know if you can get it anywhere outside of Sweden, but I believe the series was also broadcast on BBC, so there should be an English-subtitled version on dvd. Kom igen Lena!

Long time no outfit post! Na mijn filmpje in januari was mijn inspiratie een beetje op, en de afgelopen maanden heb ik voor het grootste deel doorgebracht in gestreepte T-shirts, mijn go-to zwarte broeken en mijn wijnrode trui van Urban Outfitters, afgewisseld met chillkleren wanneer ik thuis aan mijn thesis werkte. Maar nu het lente is vond ik het wel weer eens tijd voor iets nieuws, en sinds mijn uitstapje naar de Meir vorige week zijn deze kleren zo ongeveer het enige wat ik heb gedragen :) Het ziet er zo nonchalant uit (door de broek met opgerolde pijpen, het losse shirt en de totebag), maar tegelijk ook elegant (door de blote enkels), maar ook weer niet té elegant (door het feit dat ik sandalen draag en niet ballerina’s of hakken). Helemaal mijn ding dus! :) Naast het feit dat het allemaal lekker comfortabel is, hou ik heel erg van de combinatie van zwart en donkerblauw. Vorige week kreeg ik ook deze fijne zonnebril van Papp UV toegestuurd. Dat is een Duits merk dat onder andere zonnebrillen verkoopt die gemaakt zijn van papier. Dat vind ik echt een leuk concept! De bril is heel licht, en als je hem opvouwt is hij volledig plat, waardoor je hem bijvoorbeeld gewoon tussen een boek kunt stoppen. En verder vind ik hem er gewoon heel leuk uitzien. Wat vinden jullie? :)

Long time no outfit post! After my video in January, I was kind of out of inspiration, and I spent most of the past couple of months in my beloved striped tops, my go-to black skinnies and my winered jumper from Urban Outfitters, or – when I was at home working on my thesis – my chilling clothes. But now that spring is here, I felt it was time for something new, and since my little shopping trip last week, these are basically the only clothes I’ve worn all week :) I love the fact that it looks so casual and effortless (because of the turned up legs, the loose jumper and the tote bag), but at the same time elegant (because of the bare ankles), but not too elegant (because of the fact that I’m wearing sandals and not ballerinas or heels). Which makes it perfect for me! :) Besides the fact that it’s super comfortable to wear, I also love the combination of navy and black. Last week, I got these nice sunglasses from Papp UV, which is a German brand that sells sunglasses made of paper. I really like that concept! The glasses are super light, and when you fold them they’re completely flat, which means you can just put them between a book, for example. And I also think they look great. What do you think? :)
