Drawing

When I was cleaning out my room this week, I found a couple of drawings that I made when we were in Sweden. It seemed like a nice idea to share them with you :) I made them with felt-tip pens and water: I just coloured a seperate piece of paper with the marker, went over it with a wet paint brush and then used that to paint. Besides that, I drew some details with markers and coloured pencils.

  1. our little house
  2. my mom in the kitchen
  3. details from the windows and windowsills

Recipe: Carrot cake

rougeimaginaire: "Recipe: Carrot cake"

Now that Christmas is almost here, it seemed like a nice idea to post another recipe. One that’s extra nice when it’s winter: carrot cake :) It may sound a little strange, but anyone who has tasted it knows that it actually is delicious. It doesn’t really taste like carrots, but the carrots give the cake a nice and smooth texture. The spices make it perfect for winter, and the topping makes it even more delicious. Have fun! :)

Dit heb je nodig:

a) voor de cake

  • 280 g bruine suiker
  • 180 ml zonnebloemolie of frituurolie
  • 3 eieren
  • 200 g zelfrijzende bloem
  • 2 theelepels kaneel
  • een stukje verse gember
  • 1 theelepel gemalen kardemom
  • 300 g geraspte wortelen
  • 100 g gehakte of gemalen walnoten

  • 100 g roomkaas (bijv. Philadelphia)
  • 25 ml volle room
  • 50 g poedersuiker
  • een beetje citroensap

You’ll need:

a) for the cake

  • 280 g of brown sugar
  • 180 ml of sunflower oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 200 g of self-rising flour
  • 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
  • a piece of fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon of cardamom
  • 300 g of grated carrots
  • 100 g of chopped walnuts
  • a little bit of butter to grease the baking tin
  • a baking tin

b) for the frosting

  • 100 g of cream cheese
  • 25 ml of full cream
  • 50 g of powdered sugar
  • a little bit of lemon juice

rougeimaginaire: "Recipe: Carrot cake"

Zo maak je het:

  1. Verwarm de oven voor op 180°C.

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven on 180°C.
  2. Put the sugar and the oil in a bowl. One by one, add the eggs. Mix everything with a beater until it’s an even mixture.
  3. Grate a little bit of ginger, until you have about a teaspoon of it. Add it to the mixture.

rougeimaginaire: "Recipe: Carrot cake"

Deel 2:

  2. Voeg de kaneel toe.

Part 2:

  1. Add one teaspoon of cardamom powder. If you have cardamom pods, you can use a mortar to break the pods. Little black seeds will come out, and this is what you need. Use a blender to cut the seeds into little pieces. Add it to the mixture.
  2. Add the cinnamon.

rougeimaginaire: "Recipe: Carrot cake"

Deel 3:

  2. Rasp de wortelen en doe ze erbij.

Part 3:

  1. Add the flour and mix it well.
  2. Grate some carrots until you have about 300 g. Add this to the mixture.
  3. Cut the walnuts in little pieces, add them to the the mixture and mix everything together.

rougeimaginaire: "Recipe: Carrot cake"

Deel 4:

Smakelijk! :)

Part 4:

  1. Grease the baking tin and cover it with some flour. Now, put the mixture in the baking tin.
  2. Put it in the oven for 45 minutes to 60 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, you can make the frosting. First, mix the cream cheese with the cream. Then, add the powdered sugar and the lemon juice. Mix it well with a beater, and then put it in the fridge while you the cake is still in the oven.
  4. Check the cake. It should be still a little soft inside, but not wet. When it cools down, it will become a little more firm.
  5. Let it cool of for fifteen minutes. Then, take it out of the baking tin and put it on a large plate.
  6. Put the frosting on the cake.
  7. Cut it in pieces and treat your friends or family. Enjoy! :)

Christmas in Leuven

Christmas decorations

Christmas decorations

Christmas decorations

Christmas decorations

It’s December and that means the Christmas decorations in Leuven are back :) I was planning on taking my camera this week to take some pictures of the city, but I forgot it at home. These ones were made last year, and it actually doesn’t really matter because it looks almost the same (apart from a few ugly additions ;)). The first picture was taken at the Old Square, the third one at the Naamsestraat, and the other ones are from the Grand Square.

It’s been quite sunny and cold, even though it’s not freezing yet, so we won’t be getting snow any time soon (and I really want that, although I wouldn’t care to wait for it until the Christmas vacation). And yes, I’m saying Christmas vacation and not stuvac, because I’m that busy this year (and I’m optimistic). This semester, I only have to do two assignments and one exam, and I think that’s a welcome change when I think of the horror exam schedules I used to have with seven exams in three weeks.

I’m looking forward to Christmas. Even though I have to work for school, I really only feel like doing fun crafts projects, baking things and just having a nice time. Next week, we’re having a Christmas party in Swedish class and that’s going to be yum-yum … um I mean nice ;)

What’s your favourite way to spend the time before Christmas?

DIY snowflake mobile

rougeimaginaire: "DIY snowflake mobile"

Sometimes, I just happen to feel like doing another nice craft project, and I’m not planning on doing a blogpost on it, but then I end up liking the result so much that I want to share it anyway. That’s what this post is a typical example of. I wanted to somehow hang some snowflakes in front of my window, and then I stumbled upon this snowflake mobile on pinterest. There was no tutorial, but it didn’t seem that difficult, and it wasn’t. And I’m very happy with the result! :)

rougeimaginaire: "DIY snowflake mobile"

  • drie pareltjes
  • doorzichtige draad (niet van die elastische)
  • een tak (ongeveer 35 cm lang)
  • een naald
  • plakband
  • een haakje

You will need:

  • some paper (for the paper snowflakes)
  • a plate, glass or bowl (to make perfect round shapes)
  • a pair of scissors
  • a pencil
  • a snap-off knife (optional)
  • three plastic pearls
  • transparent thread (not the elastic type)
  • a branch (about 35 cm or 14 inches long)
  • a needle
  • some tape
  • a hook

rougeimaginaire: "DIY snowflake mobile"

First, you’re going to make the paper snowflakes. Start by deciding how big you want the snowflakes to be. I chose to do a mix of big ones and little ones, so I used a glass (7 cm in diameter) and a bowl (14 cm in diameter). Put your bowl (or glass or plate) upside down on the paper and draw the outline with your pencil. Now you have a nice circle. Cut it out with your scissors and fold it in eight.

Now it’s time to cut. I searched google images for some inspiration for beautiful snowflakes. When it’s hard to cut it out immediately, you can also copy the pattern on your folded paper before cutting it out (softly, so that it’s easy to erase it later). Down here, you can see what patterns I used. The pieces with the dark outlines are the ones you have to cut out. But there’s a lot more possibilities, and once you understand how it works you can also try your own ideas. Cut out the pieces. When you unfold the paper, you have this nice little snowflake. Now carefully erase the pencil marks. To make the snowflakes flat again, you can put them between a book for a while, or just iron over them with an iron.

rougeimaginaire: "DIY snowflake mobile"

rougeimaginaire: "DIY snowflake mobile"

Now that we have all these cute snowflakes, it’s time to make the mobile. Let’s start with the base, which is made of a branch that’s held up by two pieces of thread. Now there’s two different ways to hang it up. You can either hang both ends on the same hook, which allows the mobile to turn around, or you can hang both ends on separate hooks, if you don’t want it to turn around. You can just hang it on a hook in your room, but I think it looks the most beautiful hanging by the window.

rougeimaginaire: "DIY snowflake mobile"

rougeimaginaire: "DIY snowflake mobile"

rougeimaginaire: "DIY snowflake mobile"

Once you hung the branch, it’s time to hang the snowflakes. Take a little piece of tape and stick it on the side of the snowflake you want to be on top. This is where we’re going to attach it to the wire: the tape helps to make it a little more firm so that the paper won’t be ripped. Take the needle and make a hole in that part.

rougeimaginaire: "DIY snowflake mobile"

Take a piece of wire that’s long enough. On my mobile, the wires are about 70 cm (or 30 inches) long, so I would take a piece of one meter (or 40 inches) long. But feel free to make your wires longer or shorter. Don’t cut all the pieces at once, because they’ll get tangled. Now take one end of the piece of wire you just cut, and tie it on the pearl. This gives the wire a little more weight, so that it will hang down, instead of just sort of floating around.

rougeimaginaire: "DIY snowflake mobile"

Decide how you want to hang your snowflakes. I put a big one and a little one on every wire, and made them alternate places. Since it’s not very clear on the pictures, I made a drawing of how I did it. You just have to make sure to make a nice “composition” of snowflakes, but you don’t have to plan it precisely, just see if it looks good.

rougeimaginaire: "DIY snowflake mobile"

Put the wire through the hole and tie it to the snowflake, so that it hangs on the right height. Repeat this for the second snowflake. Now tie the wire to the branch. Repeat this for the other two wires. Done! :) If you decide to make your own snowflake mobile, send me a picture of the result on twitter or instagram!

DIY lip scrub

It’s December already! This time of the year, my lips are often dry and chapped, and the best remedies for that are lip balm and lip scrub :) I really like the ones from Lush, but they’re pretty expensive. So today I want to show you how you can make your own lipscrub. :)

rougeimaginaire: "DIY lip scrub"

Although most lip scrubs only contain sugar, I like to add a little salt as well, because not only does it taste better, but salt is also a lot softer for the skin than sugar, because the grains are less rough (as you can see on the pictures below). Besides that, I add some vaseline and olive oil to soften your lips and to make the mixture a bit more sticky and consistent. Finally, I add some lip balm. Not only does this cure your lips, but it also adds some colour and taste to the mixture, which is a nice extra.

rougeimaginaire: "DIY lip scrub"

rougeimaginaire: "DIY lip scrub"

Dit heb je nodig:

  • een paar theelepels suiker
  • een (halve) theelepel zout (naar wens)
  • een theelepel olijfolie
  • een theelepel vaseline
  • +/- een theelepel lippenbalsem
  • een leeg potje

You will need:

  • a couple of teaspoons of sugar
  • one / half a teaspoon of salt (to taste)
  • one teaspoon of olive oil
  • one teaspoon of vaseline
  • +/- one teaspoon of lip balm
  • an empty container

rougeimaginaire: "DIY lip scrub"

rougeimaginaire: "DIY lip scrub"

Zo maak je het:

  3. Doe het in het potje.
  4. Klaar! :)

Directions:

    1. Put the olive oil, the vaseline and the lip balm in a small bowl and stir until you get an even mixture. It’s best to use a fork for this, because with a spoon you’ll never be able to mix everything well.
    1. Now, little by little, add the salt and the suger. Keep on adding small spoonfuls of suger until the mixture has the right consistency. It should be a granular mixture.
    1. Put it in the box.
  1. Done! :)

rougeimaginaire: "DIY lip scrub"

Tips:

Tips:

    • Make sure your bowl is big enough, because you can’t mix your ingredients properly in a tiny container.
    • Also, make sure the container is big enough, because you’ll probably end up with a lot more then you were planning to make.
    • I added the lip balm mainly for the colour and taste, but you can just replace it by some extra vaseline and olive oil if you like.
  • You can also add some honey if you like that.

jurkje / dress: COS (similar) — vest / cardigan: Brandy Melville — schoenen / shoes: Kurt Geiger

Two weeks ago, I bought some new shoes, and since then I haven’t worn any other shoes. They’re so great, and nothing is more fun than combining them with every possible outfit I can imagine. That’s what I like about a new pair of shoes: they place all of your clothes in a new perspective, to say it like that :) On these pictures, I was wearing a dress from COS that I bought a long time ago, but I never new how to combine. And I have no idea why, because actually it’s just a really nice blue dress. To be precise, I bought it in July 2011 (yes, that’s two and a half years ago), and since then, I’ve only worn it once. However, I never saw it as a bad buy, more like something I knew was a good buy, but I hadn’t figured out what I wanted to do with it yet. You know the feeling? :)

PS: The title of this post comes from a beautiful song by High Places. I haven’t been listening to a lot of music recently, but their music is something that can keep me amused. Once, I went to a High Places concert and I think it was the ‘smallest’ concert I’ve ever been to, because there were only twenty people. It was really nice :)

So I made a couple of self-portraits this weekend. I always like to try new things when it comes to photography, and I also really enjoy being both the photographer and the model. I think I’m gonna try this more often. I couldn’t choose between the ones in colour and the ones in black and white, so here’s both of them :) Which ones do you like best?

Have a nice wednesday!

PS: by the way, Oxford Dictionaries chose selfie as word of the year 2013 ;)

Kortrijk

In September, I bought a disposable camera, and after my trip to Milan I still had a lot of pictures left (as those things tend to go), so that’s why I took it with me on some other trips. During the holidays, I love to go on mini-citytrips inside Belgium, because surprisingly enough, you can discover nice things so close to home. Me and Bert went to Ghent to visit some museums (read about it here!). Besides that, I visited Kortrijk with my friend Virginie, who I hadn’t seen for quite some time, so we could catch up a little. Apart from the many rain showers, we had a nice time. :)
