DIY snowflake mobile

Sometimes, I just happen to feel like doing another nice craft project, and I’m not planning on doing a blogpost on it, but then I end up liking the result so much that I want to share it anyway. That’s what this post is a typical example of. I wanted to somehow hang some snowflakes in front of my window, and then I stumbled upon this snowflake mobile on pinterest. There was no tutorial, but it didn’t seem that difficult, and it wasn’t. And I’m very happy with the result! :)

  • drie pareltjes
  • doorzichtige draad (niet van die elastische)
  • een tak (ongeveer 35 cm lang)
  • een naald
  • plakband
  • een haakje

You will need:

  • some paper (for the paper snowflakes)
  • a plate, glass or bowl (to make perfect round shapes)
  • a pair of scissors
  • a pencil
  • a snap-off knife (optional)
  • three plastic pearls
  • transparent thread (not the elastic type)
  • a branch (about 35 cm or 14 inches long)
  • a needle
  • some tape
  • a hook

First, you’re going to make the paper snowflakes. Start by deciding how big you want the snowflakes to be. I chose to do a mix of big ones and little ones, so I used a glass (7 cm in diameter) and a bowl (14 cm in diameter). Put your bowl (or glass or plate) upside down on the paper and draw the outline with your pencil. Now you have a nice circle. Cut it out with your scissors and fold it in eight.

Now it’s time to cut. I searched google images for some inspiration for beautiful snowflakes. When it’s hard to cut it out immediately, you can also copy the pattern on your folded paper before cutting it out (softly, so that it’s easy to erase it later). Down here, you can see what patterns I used. The pieces with the dark outlines are the ones you have to cut out. But there’s a lot more possibilities, and once you understand how it works you can also try your own ideas. Cut out the pieces. When you unfold the paper, you have this nice little snowflake. Now carefully erase the pencil marks. To make the snowflakes flat again, you can put them between a book for a while, or just iron over them with an iron.

Now that we have all these cute snowflakes, it’s time to make the mobile. Let’s start with the base, which is made of a branch that’s held up by two pieces of thread. Now there’s two different ways to hang it up. You can either hang both ends on the same hook, which allows the mobile to turn around, or you can hang both ends on separate hooks, if you don’t want it to turn around. You can just hang it on a hook in your room, but I think it looks the most beautiful hanging by the window.

Once you hung the branch, it’s time to hang the snowflakes. Take a little piece of tape and stick it on the side of the snowflake you want to be on top. This is where we’re going to attach it to the wire: the tape helps to make it a little more firm so that the paper won’t be ripped. Take the needle and make a hole in that part.

Take a piece of wire that’s long enough. On my mobile, the wires are about 70 cm (or 30 inches) long, so I would take a piece of one meter (or 40 inches) long. But feel free to make your wires longer or shorter. Don’t cut all the pieces at once, because they’ll get tangled. Now take one end of the piece of wire you just cut, and tie it on the pearl. This gives the wire a little more weight, so that it will hang down, instead of just sort of floating around.

Decide how you want to hang your snowflakes. I put a big one and a little one on every wire, and made them alternate places. Since it’s not very clear on the pictures, I made a drawing of how I did it. You just have to make sure to make a nice “composition” of snowflakes, but you don’t have to plan it precisely, just see if it looks good.

Put the wire through the hole and tie it to the snowflake, so that it hangs on the right height. Repeat this for the second snowflake. Now tie the wire to the branch. Repeat this for the other two wires. Done! :) If you decide to make your own snowflake mobile, send me a picture of the result on twitter or instagram!
