Deze foto’s maakte Bert van mij op onze laatste dag in Stockholm. De eerste is gemaakt op Birger Jarls Torg. Birger Jarl is de man die in 1250 de stad Stockholm zou hebben gesticht. “Jarl” is een titel die graaf betekent. Op het plein lag een grote sneeuwhoop waar ik op geklommen ben. Ik vind het best een fijne foto geworden. Omdat het al een beetje aan het schemeren was moesten we lange sluitertijden gebruiken en dat zie je aan de bewegende sneeuwvlokjes op de achtergrond. Ik had mijn rode muts van de Episode op, en mijn leren rugzak die ik voor mijn twintigste verjaardag van Bert had gekregen. Hij kwam van de Foxhole in Antwerpen, maar die winkel is ondertussen weg (hoewel hij volgens hun site nog steeds bestaat).

De tweede foto is gemaakt op Evert Taubes Terrass, waar ik gisteren over schreef. Op de achtergrond zie je links Långholmen, een eiland met bijna alleen maar bomen op, en rechts de Västerbro die naar Kungsholmen leidt. Daar lag nu een stuk meer sneeuw dan de vorige keer dat we daar kwamen, drie dagen ervoor. Mijn dr. Martens kwamen trouwens ook heel goed van pas in Stockholm, omdat ze veel textuur op de zolen hebben, wat handig was omdat het soms glad was.

Bert took these pictures of me on our last day in Stockholm. The first one was made at Birger Jarls Torg. Birger Jarl is the man who founded the city of Stockholm in 1250. “Jarl” is a title that means “duke.” On the square was a big snow pile, and I climbed on it. I really like how the picture turned out. It was already getting dark, so we had to use a long shutter time, that’s why you can see the snowflakes in the background falling down. I had my red hat from episode on, and the leather backpack that I received as a birthday gift from Bert when i turned twenty. He bought it at Foxhole in Antwerp, but that store doesn’t exist anymore (even though their site doesn’t mention that).

The second picture was made at Evert Taubes Terrass, about which i wrote yesterday. On the left side of the background, you can see Långholmen, an island that’s full of trees, and on the right side the Västerbro that leads to Kungsholmen. There was a lot more snow than the last time we were on Evert Taubes Terrass, which was three days before. My dr. Martens came in very usefully, because they have textured soles and the roads were quite slippery sometimes.

Deze foto’s maakten we op onze laatste dag in Stockholm. Het had de vorige dag heel veel gesneeuwd, en het begon alweer donker te worden. We gingen naar Evert Taubes Terrass, van waar je een mooi uitzicht heb op Södermalm, Kungsholmen en de Västerbro die hen met elkaar verbindt. Op de tweede foto zie je het stadhuis van Stockholm, dat donkerrood met groen en goud is. Ik vind het best wel een mooi stadhuis, en ook heel modern als je het vergelijkt met dat van Antwerpen of Leuven (wat logisch is, aangezien het zo’n vijfhonderd jaar later gebouwd is ;)). Op de laatste foto zie je het standbeeld van Evert Taube, een bekende Zweedse zanger. Hij maakte volksmuziek, een beetje vergelijkbaar met Wannes Van de Velde misschien. Hij wordt beschouwd als een soort nationale volksdichter, net als Carl Michael Bellman en Cornelis Vreeswijk. Als je een mooi plekje voor foto’s zoekt (of voor een picknick in de zomer) is dit zeker een aanrader! :)

We made these pictures on our last day in Stockholm. The day before, it had snowed quite a lot, and it was already getting a bit dark. We went to Evert Taubes Terrass, from where you have a beautiful view on Södermalm, Kungsholmen and the Västerbro that connects them. On the second photo you can see the city hall, that I find quite modern when I compare it to the city hall of Antwerp or Leuven (which is logical, since it’s built about five hundred years later ;)). On the last picture is a statue of Evert Taube, a famous Swedish singer. He made folk music, and lived in the first half of the 20th century. He is considered some kind of national poet, just like Carl Michael Bellman and Cornelis Vreeswijk. If you’re looking for a nice spot for pictures (or for a picnic, in the summer) I recommend this place! :)

Op onze laatste dag in Stockholm gingen we in het Fotografiska de tentoonstelling van David Lachapelle bezoeken. Op zo’n foto’s kwamen vaak bekende figuren voor: niet alleen Michael Jackson, Britney Spears en Whitney Houston maar ook Jezus! De jezusfoto’s vond ik echt het beste, omdat er allerlei moderne personages op staan, maar dat de foto’s net zo opgebouwd zijn als oude schilderijen. Het is leuk om te zien dat zo’n aanpak dat soort beelden weer interessant kan maken. Zijn foto’s stralen allemaal zoiets commercieels uit, waren heel kleurrijk en hadden ook wel vaak iets collage-achtigs, ze waren opgebouwd uit heel veel verschillende elementen. Er waren ook foto’s rond het thema van de zondvloed, en je kon ook videoclips bekijken die hij had gemaakt, zoals die van No doubt, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani en Florence + the machine, en de making of van een paar foto’s. Ik vond het best wel een fijne tentoonstelling! :) Als je meer over hem wil weten, kijk dan hier.

On our last day in Stockholm, we went to an exposition about David Lachapelle at Fotografiska. There were a lot of pictures of famous people: not only Michael Jackson, Britney Spears and Whitney Houston, but also Jesus! I really liked the Jesus pictures, because there are all these modern characters, but the photos are composed like ancient paintings. It’s really nice to see how this can make these kinds of images interesting again, whereas we wouldn’t even properly look at them if they were old paintings. All of his pictures had this kind of “commercial” vibe, they were very colourful and composed of a lot of different elements. There were also pictures about the deluge theme, and you could watch videoclips that he directed, such as No doubt, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani and Florence + the machine, and the making of of a few photos. Op onze laatste dag in Stockholm was het eindelijk opgeklaard :) In de voormiddag wandelden we naar Södermalm om een bezoekje te brengen aan het Fotografiska, waarover ik morgen meer zal vertellen. Daar maakte ik deze foto van Bert. In de namiddag maakten we nog een wandelingetje op Riddarholmen en in Gamla Stan, en ‘s avonds gingen we warme chocolademelk drinken bij Chokladkoppen.

On our last day in Stockholm, the clouds were finally gone :) In the morning, we walked to Södermalm to visit Fotografiska, about which I’ll tell more tomorrow. That’s where I made this picture of Bert. In the afternoon, we walked around on Riddarholmen and in Gamla Stan, and in the evening, we drank a cup of delicous hot chocolate at Chokladkoppen.

Op onze vierde dag in Stockholm was het heel koud en sneeuwde het hard, het ideale weer om naar Moderna Museet te gaan dus! :)Er was een tentoonstelling van Picasso en Duchamp, eentje van Le Corbusier (niet alleen over zijn architectuur maar ook over zijn schilderijen), en dan nog een vaste tentoonstelling met werk van verschillende moderne kunstenaars, zoals Roy Lichtenstein en Francis Bacon. De dingen van Picasso vond ik echt de moeite, er waren vooral veel etsen van hem. De portretten van Picasso en Duchamp die je op de eerste twee foto’s ziet vond ik ook wel mooi. De schilderijen van Le Corbusier waren vooral heel evenwichtig en uitgebalanceerd, je zag wel dat hij dat goed onder de knie had. Bij de vaste collectie hingen ook metalen bordjes met daarop een soort korte gedichten, of woordspelingen, die ik wel leuk vond, en een paar gekke voorwerpen, zoals een trapladder waarbij de treden zo dicht bij elkaar stonden dat je er niet met je voeten tussen kon, en een stapelbed waarbij het bovenste bed ondersteboven hing. Als je in Stockholm bent, dan is dit museum zeker een bezoekje waard! :)

On our fourth day in Stockholm, it was cold and snowing really hard, the ideal weather for a visit to Moderna Museet! :)There was an exposition about Picasso and Duchamp, one about Le Corbusier (not only about his architecture but also about his paintings), and then there was the permanent exposition with work from different modern artists, such as Roy Lichtenstein and Francis Bacon. I really liked Picasso’s things, they were mainly etchings. the portraits of Picasso and Duchamp on the first to pictures were also cool. The paintings by Le Corbusier were mostly perfectly well-balanced. In the permanent collection there were these metal signs with poems/word plays, which I liked, and some strange objects, like a stepladder where the steps were so close to each other that you couldn’t get your foot between them, and bunk beds where the top bed was upside down. If you’re ever in Stockholm, this museum is certainly worth a visit! :)

Op onze derde dag in Stockholm was het nog steeds koud en grijs, en dus gingen we winkelen op Södermalm. eerst namen we nog een kijkje op de Monteliusvägen, een straatje van waar je een mooi uitzicht hebt op Gamla Stan en Kungsholmen. Ik had mijn nieuwe lippenstift van Face Stockholm op, die ik sindsdien bijna elke dag gedragen heb. De kleur heet hjärta, wat “hart” betekent :) Het is een soort oranjerode kleur, die eigenlijk heel goed bij mijn nieuwe muts van Monki past. Ook Bert had zijn nieuwe kleren aan. We aten middageten bij Hermans, een heel gezellig vegetarisch restaurant. Voor 110 kronen (ongeveer 13 euro) mocht je eten van het buffet, met koffie of thee inbegrepen. Een goede prijs, als je bedenkt dat een gewoon broodje met een slaatje erbij zo ongeveer evenveel kost. Het eten was echt lekker, en het was fijn dat je naar hartelust van alles kon proeven.

Na het eten gingen we winkelen. We zijn langsgeweest bij Emmaus, een tweedehandswinkel waar je voor weinig geld best wel leuke spullen kon vinden (niet alleen kleren maar ook decoratie). Een andere leuke winkel was Tjallamalla, waar ze kleren van beginnende ontwerpers verkopen. Sommige waren wel wat aan de dure kant, maar er waren er ook die best betaalbaar waren. Vlak daarbij had je Petsounds, dat is een platenzaak waar ze wel veel dingen hebben (vergelijkbaar met Bilbo in België). Ik vind het altijd wel leuk om in Zweden cd’s te kopen, want daar vind je Zweedse muziek die ze bij ons niet verkopen. Verder zijn we ook nog even langs geweest bij Monki en Weekday op Södermalm.

On our third day in Stockholm, it was still cold and grey, so we decided to do some more shopping on Södermalm. First, we went to take a look at Monteliusvägen, a little street from where you have a nice view on Gamla Stan and Kungsholmen. I had my new lipstick from Face Stockholm on, actually I’ve been wearing it nearly every day since I bought it. The colour is called hjärta, which means “heart” :) It’s some sort of an orange/red colour, kind of like my new hat from Monki. Bert was wearing his new clothes as well. We ate lunch at Hermans, a vegetarian restaurant where it’s super nice and cosy. For 110 crowns (that’s around 13 euros), we could eat from the buffet, and coffee or tea was included. I think that’s a good price, considering that a regular sandwich with a salad costs just as much. The food was really good, and it was fun to taste a bit of everything.

After lunch, we went shopping. We went to Emmaus, a second hand store with a lot of clothes and decoration for fair prices. Another store we went to was Tjallamalla, where they had clothes from beginning designers. Some things were quite expensive, but there were some affordable things as well. We also went to Petsounds, that’s a cd store where they have quite a lot of things. I like to go shopping for cd’s in Sweden, because they always have a lot of swedish music that you can’t find in Belgium. Besides, we went to Monki and Weekday at Södermalm.

Hoi! Tijdens de lesvrije week ben ik met mijn broer Bert een weekje naar Stockholm geweest :) Op de dag dat we aankwamen was het heerlijk zonnig weer. Bij het opstijgen in Brussel waren we nog door een dicht wolkendek gevlogen, maar tegen de tijd dat we over Zweden vlogen konden we beneden de besneeuwde velden en de groene bossen zien. Vanuit het vliegveld namen we de bus naar Cityterminalen, en daarna was het nog maar een kwartiertje wandelen naar het Achipelago hostel, waar we verbleven (Best een aanrader, vind ik! De kamers zijn niet zo groot, en je moet er ook aan denken om een plastic zak mee te nemen, want dat is namelijk de enige manier om je spullen droog te houden in de douche, maar het personeel is heel vriendelijk en er is ook een gezellige keuken, wat wel handig is als je ook een keer zelf wil koken).

Voor het middageten gingen we naar Café Kladdkakan, en daar aten we een heerlijke getoaste boterham met kip en wortelcake als dessert. Na het eten gingen we een kijkje nemen bij Bloppis, een soort kledingverkoop van bloggers, en daarna haastten we ons naar het Nationalmuseum, dat de volgende dag zou sluiten voor renovatie. Het was er best wel druk, maar we hebben toch eens kunnen rondkijken naar alles wat er te zien was: vooral veel klassieke schilderkunst, uit Zweden, Nederland en Vlaanderen, maar ook design uit verschillende tijden en een tijdelijke tentoonstelling met het thema “licht en donker”. Het museum is gelegen in een mooi en imposant gebouw, en ik vond het wel fijn om daar rond te lopen. Toen was het tijd om, via een omweg langs de supermarkt (die trouwens altijd tot tien uur ‘s avonds openbleef), terug te gaan naar ons jeugdherberg en daar pasta te koken en onze koffers uit te pakken.

Hi! In my week off, I went on a trip to Stockholm with my brother Bert :) On the day we arrived it was nice and sunny. When the plane took off in Brussels, we went trough a thick layer of clouds, but by the time we were flying over Sweden, we could see the snowy fields and the green woods. At the airport, we took a bus to Cityterminalen, and after that, it was only a fifteen minute walk to the Archipelago hostel, where we were staying (I recommend it! The rooms are quite small and you have to bring a plastic bag because that’s the only way to keep your things dry when you’re in the shower, but the staff is super friendly and there’s a kitchen, which is nice if you want to save some money on food).

For lunch, we went to Café Kladdkakan and had delicious roasted bread with chicken and carrot cake for dessert. After lunch, we went to have a look at Bloppis, it was a thing where a couple of bloggers sold their old clothes that weekend, and after that, we went to the Nationalmuseum, because it was closing for renovation the next day. It was quite crowded, but we did have a chance to look around at all the different things they had: mainly classical painting, but also design from different periods and a temporary exposition with the theme “light and darkness.” The building was beautiful and stately and nice to walk around in. Afterwards, it was time to go back to our hostel, after a short stop to the supermarket, and cook some pasta and unpack our things.

Op de tweede dag was het grijs en koud en dus leek ons dat het geschikte moment om op Norrmalm te gaan winkelen. De belangrijkste winkelstraat is Drottninggatan, maar ook in de omliggende straten zijn veel winkels. Hier is een lijstje met mijn aanraders:

• Face Stockholm (Drottninggatan 22): hier verkopen ze mooie lippenstift, in heel veel kleuren!
• Weekday (Drottninggatan 63 + Olofsgatan 1): een klerenwinkel waar ze, behalve jeans in veel verschillende kleuren en maten, voor mannen én vrouwen, ook veel andere mooie dingen verkopen.
• American Apparel (Kungsgatan 44): deze winkel hebben ze ook in Antwerpen, maar als je daar nog nooit geweest bent is het zeker een aanrader. Ze hebben vooral mooie basics, wel ietsje duurder, maar dat komt omdat alles gemaakt wordt in Californië en niet in China.
• Lush (Kungsgatan 15): een geweldige winkel voor zeep en badproducten! Deze winkel heb je ook in Antwerpen, maar ben ik nog nooit geraakt.
• Monki (Sergelgatan 16-18): dit is echt een van mijn favorieten! Ik had al een paar keer kleren besteld in hun webshop, dus in deze winkel moest ik zeker even langsgaan (wel alleen vrouwenkleding).
• Topshop (Sergelgatan 8-10): iedereen kent wel Topshop. het is vergelijkbaar met H&M (waarvan je er trouwens ook heel veel hebt in Stockholm), maar toch anders, en aangezien we het niet hebben in België vind ik het wel altijd fijn om daar eens een kijkje te nemen.
• COS (Biblioteksgatan 3): een van mijn favoriete winkels, je hebt er ook twee in Antwerpen. Het is ietsje duurder, maar ook heel net en mooi ontworpen.
• Ordning och reda (Drottninggatan 82): in deze winkel vind je allerlei notititieboekjes en bureauspullen, mooi ontworpen en verschillende kleuren.
• Designtorget (Kungsgatan 52): een winkel waar ze leuke hebbedingetjes verkopen.
• Beyond Retro (Drottninggatan 77): een hele leuke tweedehandswinkel.

On the second day, the weather was cold and grey and it seemed like the perfect moment to go shopping at Norrmalm. The main shopping street is Drottninggatan, but there’s also some nice stores in the streets around. Here’s a list of the things i recommend:

• Face Stockholm (Drottninggatan 22): a place where they sell nice lipstick in a lot of different colours!
• Weekday (Drottninggatan 63 + Olofsgatan 1):  a store where they not only sell pairs of jeans in a lot of different styles and colours, for both men and women, but also many other beautiful pieces of clothing.
• American Apparel (Kungsgatan 44): they also have this store in Antwerp, but if you’ve never been to American Apparel I certainly recommend it. they have really nice basics, which are a little bit more expensive because they’re made in California and not in China.
• Lush (Kungsgatan 15): a great store for soap and bath products! There’s a store in Antwerp as well, but I’ve never made it there, haha.
• Monki (Sergelgatan 16-18): one of my favourites! I had ordered some clothes on their webshop, so I just had to check the store out (they only have women’s clothes, though).
• Topshop (Sergelgatan 8-10): who doesn’t know Topshop? It’s similar to H&M (of which there are a lot of stores in Stockholm too), but still it’s different. We don’t have it in Belgium, so whenever I’m abroad I like to take a look there.
• COS (Biblioteksgatan 3):  one of my favourite stores, they have a nice and clean style, it’s a little bit more expensive but also designed beautifully.
• Ordning och reda (Drottninggatan 82): in this store you can buy all kinds of notebooks and pencil cases, nicely designed and in different colours.
• Designtorget (Kungsgatan 52): a store where they have a lot of nice gadgets.
• Beyond retro (Drottninggatan 77): a nice second hand store.
